So what are Subliminal Messages ?Quite simply, they are audio or visual stimuli which lie beneath the threshold of conscious perception, but which can be detected by the brain at a subconscious level. In other words, they are messages that you are not consciously aware of - because they are delivered in a manner which is not strong enough for your mind to detect or identify at the conscious level. But they are nevertheless strong enough to trigger a neuron in your brain - which means that they can be picked up by your subconscious mind, and will as a result be able to influence your thinking and your behaviour. Subliminal messages may be delivered as audio (sound) signals, or as picture (video) messages, using a variety of techniques. The most common type of audio

involves
masking the message beneath other sounds ... Another type (dichotic subliminals) involves delivering different messages to each ear at the same time, which makes it virtually impossible for the conscious mind to discern or comprehend either message - unlike the all-powerful subconscious mind, which is able to unravel and rationalise the content of each message. The picture messages associated with a video subliminal are usually delivered by flashing them very quickly onto a TV screen or PC monitor - so quickly that it is impossible to detect and read the message at the conscious level. Whichever technique is used, the objective is to influence or even manipulate the mind of the listener or observer - and needless to say subliminal messaging can be used as a force for good or evil. And it is potentially a very powerful force, because it is able to access and influence the most receptive part of the mind - and that is the subconscious mind. |
Why is the subconscious part of our mind so receptive ?Well partly because the subconscious mind, unlike the conscious mind, is not inclined to form arguments against the ideas that are being presented to it, which means that we are as a result more susceptible to those ideas. This fact has been exploited time and again by unscrupulous advertisers who have frequently used subliminals to force their messages upon us without our permission - so much so that subliminal messaging in advertising is now banned throughout the USA. |
